Norbert re-strengthens; Odile dumping heavy rains; Atlantic getting more active
Posted: 10:11 AM EDT on October 10, 2008
An area of disturbed weather (97L) has developed midway between Africa and the Lesser Antilles Islands. Wind shear is a moderate 10-15 knots over the disturbance, and waters are warm, about 29° C. Satellite loops show a large area of heavy thunderstorms that are beginning to look organized, with a little bit of upper-level outflow to the north. Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, October 10, 2008.
Hurricane Norbert will lose some strength and become a Category 3 hurricane on Friday as it turns and takes a northeastward track. This system will not yet make landfall over Baja California, but will bring strong winds, rain, and dangerous surf to the region due to its 121 mph winds, gusting up to 150 mph. To the southeast, Tropical Storm Sixteen-E will maintain its strength as it continues on its northwestward path, skirting along the southern shore of Mexico. The storm will have 52 mph winds with gusts up to 69 mph, and will bring heavy rain, strong winds, and dangerous surf to southern Mexico on Friday. The system is not expected to make landfall, but will closely approach land. For more information on these tropical storms please visit http://www.wunderground.com/tropical.
Wet weather is expected over much of the Caribbean on Friday. A tropical wave over Honduras and Nicaragua will trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Yucatan Peninsula. Otherwise, most of Mexico will remain mostly clear with a few scattered clouds. Another tropical wave will kick up moderate to heavy showers with possible thunderstorm development over Panama and Colombia. The combination of these two systems will bring hot and humid conditions to most of Central America. In the north, a cold front will move east of Florida, but may bring some residual moisture to the northern Gulf region. This may cause scattered afternoon showers over the Bahamas and Cuba. The Lesser Antilles will also see scattered showers and thunderstorms and humid weather as a tropical wave moves over the region on Friday.
To the south, a high pressure system over the Atlantic will pull in warmer air from the north and create a warm front over southern Brazil. This warm front will trigger moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms that will move through Paraguay and northern Argentina on Friday. Further south, a trough of low pressure off the west coast of Chile will push a cold front on shore. This will bring widespread scattered showers to the southern tip of the continent on Friday.

Did you know that...
Imagine you are driving in a car and have a fireball for a passenger. Well, that happened to one driver in Iowa when lightning struck a CB antenna that was attached to his moving car. As the radio burned, a fireball formed in the front seat.
